The story is said to be loosely based on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin.About the AuthorWilliam Somerset Maugham (1874–1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer who was among the most popular of his generation. Like Philip Carey in Of Human Bondage, Maugham lost both of his parents by the age of 10. He was raised by a his uncle and qualified as a doctor. His first novel, Liza of Lambeth (1897), sold out and Maugham gave up medicine to write full-time. During World War I, he served with the Red Cross and in the ambulance corps, before being recruited in 1916 into the British Secret Intelligence Service. He also lived in India and Southeast Asia; all of these experiences were reflected in his work.
